Sports Massage FAQs
Quick answers to the questions we get asked most about sports massage at our Manchester clinic.
How much does a sports massage cost in Manchester?
At HEKAS, your first 1-hour session is £80 and includes a full assessment, hands-on treatment and a personalised recovery plan (new clients only; a £10 non-refundable booking fee applies). After that, you can save with sports therapy packages from £840 for 4 sessions. See all prices on our membership page.
What is the difference between a massage and a sports massage?
A relaxation massage uses lighter, flowing strokes to help you unwind. Sports massage is firmer and more targeted: your therapist works on the deeper layers of muscle and fascia that your training loads, using deep tissue work, myofascial release and stretching to ease tightness, improve mobility and support recovery.
Is a sports massage worth it?
If you train regularly or get stiff from long hours at a desk, sports massage can ease muscle soreness, release tight tissue and help you move more freely, so you recover better between sessions. It will not repair a torn or strained muscle on its own, which is why every HEKAS session starts with an assessment. If you have an injury, we combine hands-on work with an injury rehabilitation plan.
Does a sports massage hurt?
It should not be painful. You may feel firm pressure and some discomfort in tight areas, but your therapist will work within your tolerance. Tell them if the pressure is too much at any point.
Do you take your clothes off for a sports massage?
Only the area being treated needs to be uncovered. Wear comfortable clothes such as shorts and a sports top, and tell your therapist what you are comfortable with. Your comfort always comes first.
What happens at my first appointment?
We start with a postural and movement assessment to find what is driving your pain or tightness. Your therapist then treats you with targeted deep tissue work, adding IASTM, cupping or stretching where they will help, and you leave with home advice and a personalised recovery plan.
How often should I get a sports massage?
It depends on how hard you train. Regular exercisers training 3 to 4 times a week often book every two weeks, while recreational athletes can benefit from a monthly maintenance session. Your therapist will recommend a schedule after your assessment.
